Best known for
Après & vibe
A simple clubhouse and the friendly volunteer atmosphere of two historic upland villages, with local pubs and the Wanlockhead heritage sites nearby.
The snow centre
Lowther Hills Ski Club runs a small, genuine outdoor ski area in the Southern Uplands, centred on Scotland's two highest villages, Wanlockhead and Leadhills in Dumfries and Galloway. It is a community-owned, volunteer-based operation rather than a commercial resort: a nursery area at Leadhills and an intermediate slope with a ski tow on Lowther Hill above Wanlockhead, plus a clubhouse. Skiing runs entirely on natural snow, so the club aims to open only on the limited number of days each season when cover and volunteers allow, mostly at weekends and holidays. The area carries real heritage as one of the cradles of Scottish snowsports, and suits members, families and enthusiasts who value that grassroots, weather-dependent character over guaranteed lift-served skiing.
The slope
A dedicated nursery area at Leadhills is aimed squarely at beginners and children.
A tow-served intermediate slope on Lowther Hill gives improvers somewhere to progress.
Limited terrain for advanced skiers given the small, natural-snow area.
Not an expert venue; the appeal is community skiing and heritage, not steep pistes.
Cradle of Scottish snowsports
The Lowther Hills carry a long skiing and curling heritage, and the volunteer-run club keeps grassroots snowsports alive around Wanlockhead and Leadhills.
