About Milan

Milan is Italy without the tourist crowds that besiege Rome and Florence — a working capital of fashion, finance and design that reveals its treasures to those who look. Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, housed in a refectory off Corso Magenta, is one of the world's most affecting paintings — book the timed-entry tickets months ahead. The aperitivo tradition, where a €8 Campari spritz comes with a buffet of food, is a daily institution.

Why go

Milan makes an outstanding family city break and an equally good anchor for northern Italian exploration. The city's cultural depth — Leonardo's Last Supper alone justifies a visit — is matched by its fashion and design identity, compelling for design-conscious teenagers and adults alike. The aperitivo culture (buying a drink in a bar entitles you to a free food spread from around 6pm) is one of Europe's great food-value propositions and a wonderful early-evening ritual. And Milan's transport infrastructure — metro, tram, trains to the lakes — removes complexity from a trip that would otherwise require significant car-based planning. The lakes are Milan's greatest practical asset: Lake Como, with its Alpine backdrop, terraced gardens, and villages like Bellagio and Varenna, is one of Europe's most beautiful day trips by train.

Getting around Milan

Milan's metro system is efficient, clean, and easy to navigate with four lines connecting most major tourist areas. The historic tram network still operates on many city-centre routes. A rechargeable ATM card (available from metro station vending machines) covers metro, tram, and bus. The city is notably walkable in its historic centre — the Duomo, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, La Scala, and the Castello Sforzesco are all within comfortable walking distance of each other. For lake day trips, frequent direct trains from Milano Centrale connect to Varenna (Lake Como), Stresa (Lake Maggiore), and Bergamo. Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains reach Turin (45 min), Venice (2 hours) and Florence (under 2 hours) — making Milan an excellent base for broader Italian exploration.

Milan's ATM network operates four metro lines (M1 red, M2 green, M3 yellow, M5 purple), an extensive tram network, and city bus services. An integrated day/multi-day ticket covers all modes within the city limits. The metro is clean, frequent, and easy to navigate with English signage. The Malpensa Express train connects Malpensa Airport to Cadorna station (50 minutes). Linate Airport connects to the city centre via metro line M4 (opened 2022, 15 minutes to Duomo). Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains from Milano Centrale reach the rest of Italy quickly.

Insider tips

• Book Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper (Cenacolo Vinciano) months in advance — viewing is in timed slots of 15 minutes with a maximum of 25 people, and tickets genuinely sell out three to four months ahead for peak season. • The rooftop of the Duomo is one of the finest urban viewpoints in Europe — sunset from among the cathedral's 135 marble spires with the Alps visible on a clear day is spectacular. • Aperitivo in the Navigli is best enjoyed on a Tuesday or Wednesday — weekends shift from local to tourist and the best watering holes fill; mid-week gives a more authentic, less-queued version of the ritual. • The Pinacoteca di Brera is free on the first Sunday of every month and contains Raphael's Marriage of the Virgin, Mantegna's Dead Christ, and Caravaggio — among Italy's most underrated great art galleries. • Take the Passante train from Cadorna to Varenna-Esino (Lake Como) on a weekday — 70 minutes, avoiding the tourist circus of Como town's lakefront, arriving at the prettiest village on the lake. • The Fondazione Prada (tram-accessible from Navigli) is one of Europe's finest contemporary art foundations in a stunning Rem Koolhaas conversion; Bar Luce (designed by Wes Anderson) is worth the journey alone.

▸ When you'll go

Best time to visit Milan

April – June, September – October

Milan's climate is continental — more extreme than Italy's coasts or Rome. Summer (June–August) can be oppressively hot and humid (30–34°C in July and August) and the city's enclosed geography traps heat. This is the least comfortable season for intensive sightseeing. Spring (April–May) is Milan's finest season for visitors: mild temperatures (15–22°C), clear skies, flowering gardens, and the lakes at their most beautiful. Autumn (September–October) is equally pleasant and benefits from wine harvest activity in the surrounding region. Winter (November–February) is cold, grey, and often foggy — historically atmospheric but best avoided for families seeking comfortable outdoor exploration.

Getting there

Milan has two major airports serving UK routes. Malpensa Airport (MXP), 50 kilometres northwest of the city, handles most long-haul and many short-haul services including British Airways direct from Heathrow (approximately 2 hours). Linate Airport (LIN), just 7 kilometres east, is the more convenient option for short-haul services; a new M4 metro line connects it to the city centre in 15 minutes. easyJet, Ryanair, Vueling, and others serve Milan from multiple UK airports, making fares competitive. Bergamo's Orio al Serio Airport (BGY) is Ryanair's primary northern Italy hub — budget significant extra transfer time from there.
