About Qalhat

On Oman's rugged eastern coast, Qalhat was a flourishing medieval trading port praised by Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta before earthquakes and conquest left it in ruins. Today the site spreads across a plateau above the sea, its most prominent survivor the domed mausoleum of Bibi Maryam — an evocative, atmospheric window into the Indian Ocean trade world.
