About Caliphate City of Medina Azahara
Just outside Córdoba, Medina Azahara was a dazzling city-palace built by the Umayyad caliph as a statement of power, only to be sacked and abandoned barely 70 years later. Rediscovered and partly excavated, its terraced ruins — grand reception halls, arches and gardens on a hillside — offer a haunting glimpse of the splendour of Moorish al-Andalus at its zenith.
