About Church Town of Gammelstad

Near Luleå in northern Sweden, Gammelstad is the best-preserved example of a church town, where over 400 little red-painted wooden cottages huddle around a 15th-century stone church. Parishioners from far-flung farms once stayed in them overnight to attend services in the long, dark winters — a distinctive tradition of the Nordic north.
