About Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park

Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a park defined by depth, narrowness and shadow. In western Colorado, the Gunnison River has sawed a chasm so steep, so tight and so profound that parts of the inner gorge receive only a sliver of direct sunlight each day, which is how the canyon earned its name. In places the walls plunge over 2,000 feet to a river you can barely see, and the sheer Painted Wall is the tallest cliff in Colorado.

Two billion years of rock, cut by a relentless river

The canyon exposes some of the oldest rock in North America, ancient dark gneiss and schist streaked with lighter bands of intruded pink pegmatite, the source of that Painted Wall drama. What makes the Black Canyon so extreme is the combination of hard rock and a steep, fast river; the Gunnison drops more sharply here than almost any river in the country, giving it the cutting power to carve a gorge far deeper than it is wide. The result is dizzying and slightly unnerving to peer into. For a UK family, it is a park of vertigo-inducing overlooks and raw geological spectacle, a place where a short walk to the rim delivers a view that genuinely takes the breath away.

Why go

You come to the Black Canyon to stand at a railing, look straight down, and feel your stomach lurch. There is nothing gradual about it: the overlooks deliver instant, jaw-dropping drama as the walls fall away to the thread of river far below. Driving the South Rim, you stop at viewpoint after viewpoint, each framing the abyss differently, until you reach the vertiginous Painted Wall. Teenagers who feign boredom at 'another canyon' fall silent at the sheer scale of the drop. It is a compact, uncrowded park compared with Colorado's giants, so you get the thrill without the queues. Sunset paints the opposite wall gold while the depths sink into shadow, and the dark skies here make it a superb, quiet spot for stargazing once the light fades.

▸ Getting around

Getting around Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park

Exploration centres on the paved South Rim Road, which runs along the canyon edge past a series of overlooks, each a short walk from a small car park. You drive from viewpoint to viewpoint, and the whole rim can be seen in a day, though it deserves an unhurried pace. There is no shuttle, so a hire car is essential. The more remote North Rim is reached by a long drive around and via partly unpaved roads, and it closes in winter. The inner canyon has no road access for casual visitors; reaching the river involves steep, unmaintained scrambles suitable only for the experienced and well-prepared. Keep to the rim with children and teens. Watch the unfenced edges carefully and check seasonal road closures before planning a North Rim visit.

There is no public transport to or within Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. For a family of five, a hire car is essential and, happily, the airport at Montrose is so close that the drive is short and simple. There are no shuttles or buses serving the park. Plan to fly into Montrose or Grand Junction, pick up a rental car, and use Montrose as your base for exploring the rim overlooks at your own pace, ideally combining the park with a wider Colorado road trip.

▸ What you'll do

Insider tips

  • The South Rim is the more accessible and developed side; the North Rim is remote, quieter and reached by a long detour.
  • Drive the South Rim Road slowly and stop at multiple overlooks, as each offers a distinct view of the gorge.
  • The Painted Wall overlook is the must-see; go near sunset for the best light on the striped cliff.
  • Descending to the river is for experienced, fit hikers only via steep unmaintained routes, not casual family walks.
  • Keep a firm hold of younger teens near the unfenced edges; the drops are sheer.
  • Dark skies make this an excellent stargazing park, so linger after sunset.
  • The North Rim road is often closed in winter, so check conditions.

▸ When you'll go

Best time to visit Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park

Late spring through early autumn (May to September) offers the best weather and full access. The North Rim and some roads close in winter.

The Black Canyon sits at high elevation, so expect cool temperatures and big daily swings. Summers bring warm, pleasant days ideal for exploring the rim, though afternoon thunderstorms are common and nights stay cool. Spring and autumn are crisp and beautiful, with autumn colour along the rim. Winters are cold and snowy, closing the North Rim road and limiting access. The sun is intense at altitude. Pack layers, a warm jacket even in summer, sun protection, sturdy footwear and rain gear for sudden storms. Bring water, as the dry mountain air dehydrates you quickly.

Getting there

The park is unusually easy to reach for such a dramatic destination. Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ) sits only about fifteen minutes from the South Rim entrance, and Grand Junction (GJT) is roughly an hour and a half away with more flight options. From the UK, you will connect through a hub such as Denver, then take a short onward flight to Montrose or Grand Junction. Hiring a car is essential, as there is no other practical way to reach or explore the park. Montrose makes a convenient base with lodging, restaurants and supplies, and its proximity means you can be standing at the canyon rim within minutes of setting off. For a UK family, the Black Canyon also pairs naturally with a wider Colorado or Utah red-rock road trip, so consider stringing it together with Arches, Canyonlands or the Rockies.

  • Montrose (MTJ) — ~15 mins to the South Rim entrance
  • Grand Junction (GJT) — ~1.5 hrs to the South Rim via Montrose
