About Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Cuyahoga Valley is proof that a national park need not be remote to be remarkable. Tucked into the green corridor between the cities of Cleveland and Akron in northeast Ohio, it follows the winding Cuyahoga River through a landscape of waterfalls, woodland, wetlands and rolling farmland, all threaded together by the historic Ohio and Erie Canal towpath. Once heavily industrialised and polluted, this valley has been reclaimed by nature and now stands as one of the great American conservation success stories.

Rivers, rails and waterfalls

The park's signature sight is Brandywine Falls, a 60-foot cascade tumbling over layered sandstone, reached by an easy boardwalk. The Towpath Trail runs the length of the valley, following the old canal route and perfect for walking or cycling, while the beloved Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad carries visitors gently through the heart of the park. For a UK family, its accessibility, gentle scenery and easy mix of history and nature make it an unusually relaxed and rewarding national park.

Why go

Cuyahoga Valley is the national park you can enjoy without a wilderness survival plan. It rewards curiosity and ease rather than endurance, and that makes it a wonderful choice for a family. You can stand at the foot of Brandywine Falls within minutes of the car park, cycle miles of flat, shaded towpath, or hop aboard the scenic railroad and watch the valley roll past the window.

What makes it special is the sheer variety packed into a compact, walkable landscape: waterfalls, wetlands alive with herons and beavers, quiet woodland trails, restored canal locks and working farms. Teenagers can cycle the towpath one day and clamber the ledges of a rocky gorge the next. It is a gentle, generous park that lets a family choose its own pace and still come away feeling they have properly been somewhere.

▸ Getting around

Getting around Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Getting around Cuyahoga Valley is easy and flexible. A network of park roads connects the main sights, from Brandywine Falls to the visitor centres and trailheads, and you will use your hire car to move between them, as distances within the long, narrow park can add up. The star attraction, though, is car-free: the flat Towpath Trail runs the length of the valley and is ideal for walking or cycling, and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad lets you ride the length of the park and even bring bikes aboard. Many visitors combine train, bike and short walks rather than driving everywhere. There are no significant seasonal closures, though winter weather can affect trail conditions and some services run reduced schedules off-season.

Cuyahoga Valley is better served than most national parks, since it lies between two cities and the scenic railroad runs through it, but public transport to and within the park is still limited and geared more to leisure than logistics. Regional transit from Cleveland or Akron does not reliably reach the main sights. For a family of five, a hire car remains the most practical choice, letting you move easily between the widely spaced trailheads and waterfalls, then park up and switch to the towpath or railroad for the day. Collect a car at Cleveland airport and treat public options as an enjoyable extra rather than your main way around.

▸ What you'll do

Insider tips

  • Ride the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad one way and cycle the Towpath Trail back, using the railroad's bike-aboard service; it is the classic way to see the valley.
  • Brandywine Falls is the busiest spot, so arrive early or late to avoid the crowded car park.
  • Don't miss The Ledges, a lesser-known area of dramatic sandstone cliffs and cool, mossy passages that teens love.
  • Entry to the park is free, unusually for a national park.
  • Bring or hire bikes; the flat, car-free towpath is one of the park's great pleasures.
  • Combine your visit with nearby Cleveland or Akron for meals and accommodation, as in-park lodging is limited.
  • Autumn brings spectacular leaf colour and is arguably the finest season to visit.

▸ When you'll go

Best time to visit Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Late spring through autumn is ideal, with autumn foliage a highlight; winter offers quiet, snowy trails.

Northeast Ohio has four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid with occasional thunderstorms; spring and autumn are mild and often the most beautiful times to visit, with autumn delivering brilliant foliage. Winters are cold and can bring significant snow and ice, though the park stays open and offers quiet, snowy walks. Rain is possible in any season. Pack layers, comfortable walking or cycling shoes, a waterproof jacket and, in winter, warm clothing and grippy footwear for potentially icy trails. Insect repellent is useful in the wetlands during summer months.

Getting there

Cuyahoga Valley is one of the most accessible national parks in the country, sitting just 30 minutes by car from both Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) and, slightly further, Akron-Canton (CAK). From the UK you would reach Cleveland via a connection through an eastern hub such as New York, Chicago or Washington. On arrival, hire a car for the short drive into the valley. Because the park is wedged between two cities, it is easy to combine with an urban stay, giving a UK family the comfort of city hotels and restaurants alongside easy access to nature. The proximity to a major airport and the short transfer make this one of the simplest national parks to slot into a trip.

  • Cleveland (CLE) — ~30 min to the Boston Mill Visitor Center
  • Akron-Canton (CAK) — ~40 min to the Boston Mill Visitor Center
