About Pinnacles National Park

Pinnacles is one of America's smallest and youngest national parks, and one of its quirkiest. Rising from the golden hills of central California are the jagged rock spires that give the park its name — the eroded remains of an ancient volcano, split and carried northward over millions of years by the San Andreas Fault. The result is a playground of towering monoliths, hidden canyons and, most excitingly for families, talus caves.

Caves, condors and volcanic spires

These caves are not the usual dripping limestone kind but dramatic passages formed where huge boulders wedged between canyon walls, leaving cool, dark, torch-lit corridors to scramble through. Above them, the spires draw rock climbers, while the skies belong to the California condor — one of the rarest birds on Earth, reintroduced here, with its enormous wingspan often visible soaring overhead. Oddly, the park's east and west entrances are not connected by road inside, so you choose your side. For a UK family, Pinnacles is a compact, adventurous surprise: caves to explore, condors to spot and a proper sense of discovery.

Why go

You come to Pinnacles for adventure in miniature. It may be one of the smallest national parks, but it punches far above its weight for a family with active teens: dark talus caves to scramble and torch your way through, jagged spires to gaze up at, and the thrilling chance of spotting a California condor — one of the rarest birds alive — riding the thermals overhead. The caves in particular are a genuine highlight, cool and mysterious, the kind of place that turns a walk into an expedition. It is also refreshingly uncrowded and easy to reach from the Bay Area, making it a manageable escape for a family flying in from the UK. Come for a compact hit of exploration that feels far bigger than the map suggests.

▸ Getting around

Getting around Pinnacles National Park

Pinnacles is a hiking park explored on foot, but you need a hire car to reach whichever entrance you choose — there is no shuttle linking the two sides. Critically, the east and west entrances are not connected by any road inside the park, so you cannot cross from one to the other by car; getting between them means a long drive right around the outside. Decide your side in advance. On the busy east side, a seasonal shuttle has sometimes run from the visitor centre to the main trailhead at peak times to ease parking, so check current arrangements. Once parked, everything — the talus caves, the High Peaks and the reservoir — is reached on foot along a network of trails, several of which loop and interconnect. Distances are modest but trails can be steep, rocky and involve scrambling.

There is no public transport to Pinnacles — no bus or rail service reaches this rural corner of central California, and there is no shuttle between its two separate entrances. A hire car from San Jose or Monterey is essential both to get there and to reach your chosen side of the park. Within the busy east entrance, a seasonal internal shuttle to the main trailhead has sometimes operated at peak times to relieve parking pressure, so check current status, but it does not replace the need for a car to arrive. Book a rental and pick your entrance in advance.

▸ What you'll do

Insider tips

  • Bring a torch or head-torch for each person — the talus caves are genuinely dark inside.
  • Caves can close seasonally to protect roosting bats or after heavy rain, so check status before you go.
  • The east and west entrances are not linked by road inside the park; pick your side before setting off.
  • Look up for California condors, especially around the High Peaks — their vast wingspan is unmistakable.
  • Summers are scorching with little shade, so start early and carry plenty of water.
  • Spring brings wildflowers and cooler hiking; it is arguably the loveliest time to visit.
  • Wear grippy shoes and be ready for some scrambling and low ceilings in the caves.

▸ When you'll go

Best time to visit Pinnacles National Park

Spring and autumn are ideal, with mild hiking weather, wildflowers in spring and better cave access; summer is intensely hot with little shade.

Pinnacles has a hot Mediterranean climate. Summers are scorching, often well into the 30s Celsius, with intense sun and very little shade on the exposed trails — genuinely uncomfortable and best avoided in the middle of the day. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots: mild, pleasant hiking weather, with spring adding wildflowers to the golden hills. Winters are cool and can be wet. Pack sun hats, high-factor sun cream, sunglasses and plenty of water whatever the season. Bring layers for cool mornings and the surprisingly chilly caves, grippy walking shoes for scrambling, and a torch each. A light waterproof is useful in the wetter winter months.

Getting there

Pinnacles is easy to reach from the San Francisco Bay Area. A UK family flies via a US hub into San Jose (SJC), around ninety minutes' drive from the park, or the smaller Monterey (MRY) airport nearby, with San Francisco itself a slightly longer option often paired with a wider California trip. Hire a car at your arrival airport. The crucial thing to decide before you set off is which entrance you want: the park's east and west entrances are not connected by any road inside, so you cannot drive between them within Pinnacles. The east entrance has the campground and is generally the busier, more developed side; the west is quieter with dramatic rock views. Pick your side based on where you are staying and which caves and trails you are aiming for, then drive to that entrance directly.

  • San Jose (SJC) — ~1.5 hrs to the east entrance
  • Monterey (MRY) — ~1.5 hrs to the west entrance
