▸ About this event

Cusco's Inca Festival of the Sun, a grand winter-solstice reenactment culminating at the Sacsayhuamán fortress.

Inti Raymi, the Inca Festival of the Sun, is staged in Cusco each June 24, marking the southern winter solstice; the next edition falls on June 24, 2027. The reenactment moves through three sites: the Qorikancha or Temple of the Sun, the Plaza de Armas, and finally the hilltop fortress of Sacsayhuamán, where hundreds of costumed performers stage a roughly two-hour ceremony honouring the sun god Inti. Ticketed seating applies at Sacsayhuamán.

How to get there

Inti Raymi centres on Cusco, Peru. Fly into Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ), about 10 minutes by taxi from the historic centre; most visitors connect through Lima's Jorge Chávez (LIM). The festival moves between the Qorikancha temple, the Plaza de Armas and the grand finale at the Sacsayhuamán ruins on the hill above town. There is no train to the venues; from the Plaza de Armas it is a steep 30-40 minute uphill walk or a short taxi to Sacsayhuamán. Cusco sits at 3,400 m, so arrive a couple of days early to acclimatise before 24 June.
