About Mount Alvernia & The Hermitage
<p>Mount Alvernia (Como Hill), at just 206 feet, is the highest natural point in the whole Bahamas. Its summit is crowned by the Hermitage — a tiny, exquisite stone monastery, chapel and bell tower hand-carved into the rock in 1939 by Father Jerome (John Hawes), the priest-architect who also built Cat Island's twin churches at Clarence Town on Long Island. A short, steep climb past hand-cut Stations of the Cross reaches the top and a 360-degree view over Cat Island's coasts.</p>
