About Trollstigen (the Troll's Ladder)

Trollstigen ('the Troll's Ladder') is a mountain road of eleven tight hairpin bends climbing a steep valley wall past the Stigfossen waterfall, part of a Norwegian Scenic Route between Åndalsnes and the Geiranger country. A cantilevered viewing platform at the top juts over the switchbacks for the classic look straight down the zig-zag. The pass is strictly seasonal — snowbound and closed in winter — and after a 2024 rockslide it underwent major safety work, reopening for the 2026 season in late April; it can still shut at short notice in heavy rain, so check its current status before planning a route over it.
