About Sarmizegetusa Regia
Sarmizegetusa Regia is part of the Dacian Fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains, a UNESCO property of six defensive works built in the 1st centuries BC and AD. UNESCO describes them as the nucleus of the Dacian Kingdom and as an unusual fusion of military and religious ideas from the classical world and the late European Iron Age. The Romans conquered them at the start of the 2nd century AD.
The remains stand in forested hills, and the setting is much of the appeal. It is a long drive into the mountains, so we would treat it as a half or full day out from Transylvania and check access, hours and any seasonal closure with the site or the local museum beforehand, as the road and opening times can change.
