The snow centre
CopenHill, also known as Amager Bakke, is an artificial ski slope built across the sloping roof of a clean waste-to-energy plant on Amager, minutes from central Copenhagen. Designed by architects BIG, it turned a piece of urban infrastructure into a public playground, with runs of green-plastic dry-slope matting descending from the summit to the base. There is no natural snow: you ski and ride year-round on the synthetic surface, on a hill you reach by lift or by walking up alongside. It is as much a design landmark and viewpoint as a ski centre, and the roof also carries a hiking trail, a climbing wall and a rooftop bar with sweeping harbour views. The mood is playful and city-break rather than alpine, ideal for a novel afternoon in the Danish capital.
