The resort
Perched on Bolshevik mountain directly above Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the capital of Sakhalin Island, Gorny Vozdukh — Mountain Air — is one of Russia's most distinctive urban ski resorts. A modern gondola lifts you from the edge of the city to pistes with sweeping views over the town and, on clear days, the sea beyond. Sakhalin's maritime climate delivers plentiful, often heavy snowfall, and the resort has been steadily modernised into a genuine sports and tourism hub. The terrain is compact and mostly geared to intermediates and families, with the novelty and convenience of city-centre skiing being as much the draw as the mountain itself.

How to get there
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Khomutovo) International Airport (UUS) sits just a few kilometres away, connected to mainland Russian hubs; the resort is a short taxi ride from the terminal.
From the airport it is only a short drive across the city to the base station, with taxis and city transport readily available.
Best time: January through March, when Sakhalin's heavy snowfall and cold temperatures give the most consistent conditions.
