The resort
Set in a snow-trapping bowl between Otaru and Sapporo, Kiroro is one of Hokkaido's great powder addresses, blessed by some of the heaviest, driest snowfall on the island. Its two linked mountains, Nagamine and Asari, offer a well-groomed spread of pistes plus the famously feather-light tree skiing that draws powder hunters from across the world. The resort is a self-contained base with large hotels and easy family amenities, quieter and more relaxed than the international circus of nearby Niseko. What sets it apart is sheer snow depth and a season that routinely stretches later than almost anywhere else in Japan.

How to get there
New Chitose Airport (CTS), serving Sapporo, is the gateway, roughly an hour and a half to two hours away by road.
Resort shuttles and private transfers run from New Chitose Airport and Sapporo; the final approach climbs into a snowy inland valley.
Best time: January and February for the deepest powder, though Kiroro's long season means excellent snow well into March and beyond.
