Après & vibe
A rough-and-ready mountain village with cafes serving tagine and mint tea, and vendors hiring skis at the base — worlds away from an Alpine resort scene.
The snow centre
Oukaïmeden is the highest ski resort on the African continent, set among the peaks and Berber villages of the High Atlas roughly two hours by road from Marrakesh. It is a real mountain area — a scatter of drag lifts climbing steep, treeless slopes with the plains and, on clear days, distant desert stretching out below — rather than any kind of artificial venue. The altitude is what makes skiing possible at this latitude, but snow is genuinely fickle: some winters bring good cover from around January into spring, others very little, and much of the terrain is ungroomed. The atmosphere is uncommercial and characterful, with local guides hiring out old kit, mules on the pistes and mint tea between runs. It suits adventurous travellers after a novel, cultural day on the snow rather than piste perfection.
The slope
Gentle lower slopes and hireable kit make a first taste possible when snow allows.
Open mountain runs give improvers space to cruise on a good day.
Steeper, largely ungroomed upper slopes reward confident skiers.
High peaks and off-piste lines offer real adventure for well-prepared experts, conditions permitting.
Skiing the High Atlas
Oukaïmeden lets you ski Africa's highest lift-served slopes amid Berber villages, with the Atlas peaks around you and the Moroccan plains far below.
Day trip from Marrakesh
Its closeness to Marrakesh makes it a striking day out — snow in the morning, the medina by evening.
