▸ What it is

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights: in Jaipur the walled-city bazaars are lit up, and homes and temples glow with oil lamps.

Diwali (Deepavali), the festival of lights, falls on Sunday 8 November 2026 in the Government of India's holiday list. The festival days continue with Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November.

In Jaipur the walled-city bazaars, such as Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar, are traditionally lit up for the festival.

Good to know

Rajasthan Tourism notes that Jaipur's markets are generally closed on Sundays, and Diwali falls on a Sunday in 2026, so check opening hours before you plan a shopping trip. Expect closures and crowds on 8 and 9 November. Diwali is a religious festival: please be respectful around homes, shrines and temples.
