▸ What it is

The 422nd Jokkmokk Winter Market, a Sámi and local winter gathering just north of the Arctic Circle, runs 4–6 February 2027 in Swedish Lapland.

Jokkmokks marknad is a winter market held every February in Jokkmokk, just north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland. The organiser describes it as the time when all of Jokkmokk comes together to create meeting places and open homes, and as a place where Sámi culture, local enterprise, research and current issues meet. It says Sámi culture is a driving force in the market: duodji (Sámi handicraft), yoik, language, storytelling, reindeer herding and Arctic food sit alongside art, literature, research and debate. Jokkmokk Municipality is the main organiser, and the market is created together with Sámi institutions, companies, associations, vendors, researchers, artists and residents.

Its roots go back to the early 1600s, when the Swedish crown set up permanent marketplaces near the Sámi winter settlements, where the Sámi gathered with their reindeer on winter grazing land. Its history mentions King Charles IX's concern for the people of the Lapland regions, records a court session (ting) held in Jokkmokk with Sámi and coastal traders on 11–13 February 1606, and notes that the first church there was finished in 1607. The reindeer caravan through the town, a tradition today, was first held at the 350th anniversary market in 1955. The organiser says the 2025 market set a record of 53,500 visitors over its three days.

▸ What to expect

Highlights

  • The market area: open Thursday to Saturday, 10:00–18:00, with vendors in the centre of Jokkmokk.
  • Sámi culture: the organiser lists duodji, yoik, language, storytelling, reindeer herding and Arctic food as part of the programme, which had more than 240 events in 2026.
  • The reindeer caravan (ráidu): a reindeer caravan through the town, first held in 1955. In 2026 SVT broadcast it live as “Ráidu Live” on the market's Saturday.
  • Duodji and Ájtte: Swedish Lapland points to Sámi Duodji, the Sámi handicraft foundation, for exhibitions and work by Sámi artists, and to the Ájtte museum in the town centre for Sámi history, with talks and exhibitions during the market.

▸ Where to stay

Where to stay for Jokkmokk Winter Market

  • Central Jokkmokk: walk to the market. The organiser lists Hotel Jokkmokk, Hotel Akerlund and Jokkmokk Hostel, and Jokkmokk Ski Club rents dormitory mattresses at Östra School in the centre.
  • Campsites near town: Arctic Camp Jokkmokk and Skabram Camping & Holiday Village, both about 3 km from the centre.
  • Vuollerim, Porjus and Kåbdalis: about 40, 45 and 59 km away. The organiser says you'll depend on your own transport from places outside central Jokkmokk.
  • Luleå, Boden or Gällivare: the organiser says these have hotels within about two hours' drive. Luleå suits a stopover: see our Gammelstad church town guide.

The organiser says the market draws up to 50,000 visitors to a community of about 3,000, so “it may be wise to book your accommodation for the market early”, and that central accommodation fills quickly. There is no central booking agency. If you rent privately, don't pay in advance until you know who the landlord is.

▸ Getting there

Getting there & around on event days

The organiser names three airports: Luleå (LLA), Gällivare (GEV) and Arvidsjaur (AJR), with onward travel by bus or rental car. No direct flights from the UK are listed. Swedavia lists direct flights from London (British Airways, Norwegian, Ryanair and SAS), Manchester (SAS) and Edinburgh (Norwegian and SAS) to Stockholm Arlanda (ARN). From Arlanda, Norwegian, SAS and Sunclass Airlines fly to Luleå, Populair flies to Gällivare, and Populair and SAS fly to Arvidsjaur. Check the airline's timetable for early February.

By rail and bus: the organiser says you can take the train to Murjek station and continue to Jokkmokk by bus. Norrtåg's Luleå–Boden–Kiruna regional trains stop at Murjek. Regular buses are run by Länstrafiken Norrbotten (0771-100 110). During market week, Länstrafiken buses only serve Jokkmokk bus station from Wednesday to Sunday, and they take a detour through town because some streets are closed. Inlandsbanan also offers chartered trips, and the organiser lists bus package tours from towns across Sweden.

By car: the organiser suggests a rental car from the airport. There is plenty of parking at the Industrial Area at the entrance to town on road 97, with attendants; the fee goes to a non-profit organisation. Chartered buses can park at the Östra School football field, though space may be limited. Expect winter roads, and check conditions before you set off.

▸ Good to know

Practical tips & etiquette

  • Timing: the market area is open 10:00–18:00 from Thursday 4 to Saturday 6 February 2027, but events start earlier in the week and run into the evenings. Check the programme when it comes out in mid-November.
  • Cold: the organiser warns that the market falls in the middle of winter and it can be quite cold. Swedish Lapland says it's not unusual for temperatures to drop below –30°C. Wear layers of wool or other warm fabrics, a heavy down jacket, sturdy winter boots, a hat and warm gloves or mittens. There are plenty of warm indoor places with sales, exhibitions and food.
  • Respect: the market is a meeting place for the Sámi community and residents as much as for visitors. Ask before you photograph people, and give reindeer and their handlers room.
  • Paying: the organiser doesn't publish payment information, so check with vendors and venues.
  • Local food: Swedish Lapland recommends gahkku, a soft white bread best eaten warm so the butter melts, along with reindeer and elk dishes. The organiser's food page lists the cafés and restaurants open in Jokkmokk during the market.
  • Questions: Jokkmokk's Infocenter can help with planning on 0971-222 50 or infocenter@jokkmokk.se.
▸ Accessibility

Accessibility

The organiser says there are some centrally located disabled parking spaces; contact the Infocenter at the start of market week for their locations. It publishes no other accessibility information. The market is outdoors on snow and ice in severe cold. Before you travel, contact Jokkmokk's Infocenter on 0971-222 50 or infocenter@jokkmokk.se, listed on the organiser's frequently asked questions.

Safety & travel advice

The organiser advises you to check the forecast and dress for the cold. Several places to stay are far from central Jokkmokk; the organiser says you will depend on your own transport, so plan your journey back before evening events.
