Białowieża Forest
Europe's old woodland, with its bison
- National park
About Białowieża Forest
Białowieża Forest, on the eastern border, is one of Europe's oldest surviving lowland woodlands and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is a quiet place for slow walks among very old trees and for seeing European bison. The national park runs a bison demonstration reserve with an education pavilion, which is the easiest way to see the animals in a short visit.
Getting here takes planning, since it is far from the big cities and best treated as a night or two away. Access to parts of the forest is managed by the park, and the border with Belarus is nearby, and FCDO notes that access to the land borders with Belarus is restricted, so follow local rules and check the park authority's current visiting rules and booking system before you go. FCDO's health advice flags ticks, so cover up in the undergrowth.
