About Viscri Fortified Church
Viscri is one of the seven Saxon villages in southern Transylvania that UNESCO lists together as Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania. UNESCO describes a landscape of specific land use, settlement pattern and farmstead layout preserved since the late Middle Ages, dominated by fortified churches that show building styles from the 13th to the 16th century.
The church stands on a hill above the village lanes, and walking between it and the surrounding houses gives a sense of how these communities lived. It is a quiet place, best on foot, and fits well into a day from Sighișoara or Brașov with a car. Opening times and ticket arrangements are set locally and change by season, so ask your guesthouse or check before you go.
