Rising above the artsy, alternative town of El Bolsón in northern Patagonia, Cerro Perito Moreno is a small, community-spirited ski area with a distinctly relaxed, do-it-yourself character. It sits amid the lenga forests and jagged peaks of the Río Negro cordillera, offering honest, unpretentious skiing far removed from the polish of the big Andean resorts. Long run largely on grassroots enthusiasm, it has been gradually improving its lift infrastructure while keeping its friendly, low-key soul. As a Southern Hemisphere resort it operates in the austral winter, and its appeal lies in scenery, atmosphere and value rather than extensive terrain or slick facilities.

How to get there
Bariloche (BRC) is the main gateway, roughly two hours' drive north; El Bolsón also has a small airport with limited service.
From Bariloche it is a scenic drive south through the lakes to El Bolsón, then a short road up to the ski area; a hire car or local transfer is needed.
Best time: As a Southern Hemisphere resort, the season runs roughly June to September, with July and August most reliable.
