The snow centre
Kalita — Kalitos kalnas — is a modest but well-equipped hill on the edge of the resort town of Anykščiai in north-eastern Lithuania. In winter it runs short downhill and snowtubing slopes served by several lifts, with rental and instruction geared to beginners and families; when the snow goes it stays busy as an adventure park thanks to its alpine coaster and toboggan runs. This is Baltic hill skiing rather than mountain skiing: the vertical is small and the season short, leaning on cold-weather snowmaking as much as natural falls. It suits day-trippers, learners and families making the most of a winter break in the lakes-and-forests country around Anykščiai, one of Lithuania's most popular little tourist towns.
