The snow centre
Sljeme is the peak of Medvednica, the forested mountain that rises directly behind Zagreb, and it doubles as the Croatian capital's local ski area. Despite its modest altitude it punches well above its weight in reputation, thanks to the Snow Queen Trophy, a night slalom on the Alpine Ski World Cup circuit that has drawn the sport's stars to its steep competition piste. For ordinary visitors it is an easy, atmospheric day out just minutes from the city, with a handful of tree-lined runs that suit intermediates and improving skiers. Snow is genuinely marginal at this elevation and heavily reliant on cold spells and snowmaking, so the season is short and variable. When it is open, it makes a novel add-on to a Zagreb city break.

The Snow Queen Trophy
Sljeme's floodlit competition slope hosts the Snježna kraljica, a night slalom on the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, and the same steep pitch is open to visitors when conditions allow.

How to get there
Zagreb Airport is the gateway, a short transfer from both the city and the mountain.
A quick drive or bus up Medvednica from central Zagreb; the mountain is effectively a city suburb.
Best time: Mid-winter cold spells, roughly January to February, offer the best chance of open, snow-covered pistes.
