Chepelare is a working town high in the Rhodope mountains of southern Bulgaria, sitting just north of the better-known Pamporovo and sharing the same forested, southerly character. Its skiing centres on Mechi Chal, a hillside above the town whose signature is an unusually long descent that threads down through the spruce forest. This is one of Bulgaria's highest towns and a place with real skiing heritage, including a museum dedicated to skiing and mountain sport. The mood is quiet and authentic rather than resort-slick, with local guesthouses, taverns and everyday town life alongside the slopes. For skiers it makes a natural, cheaper and calmer counterpart to Pamporovo, a short distance away over the ridge.

Chepelare is for skiers who want the sunshine and forested terrain of the Rhodopes without the package-resort bustle, at even keener prices. It suits intermediates who enjoy a long, satisfying run through the trees, and travellers who value staying in a real Bulgarian town with its own life and history. Being close to Pamporovo, it also works as a quieter base for exploring both areas.

Like its Rhodope neighbours, Chepelare is southerly and moderate in altitude, so it enjoys plenty of sunshine and leans on cold snaps and snowmaking to keep its forested slopes in condition. The long descent through the spruces is at its best in cold midwinter, sheltered and scenic, while sunnier late-season days give the town an easygoing spring-skiing feel.
