The snow centre
Semkovo is a genuine outdoor ski area tucked into the spruce and pine forests on the south-eastern slopes of the Rila mountains, above the town of Belitsa in the Razlog valley. It is a low-key mountain resort with a scatter of runs and lifts, prized more for its calm, scenic setting and views towards the Pirin range than for the size of its terrain. Sitting well above the valley floor, it holds a mid-winter snow cover reasonably but is very much a small area suited to beginners, families and those wanting a gentle, uncommercial day on the snow. In summer it doubles as a base for mountain walking. Compared with big-name Bulgarian resorts it feels sleepy — which for many is precisely the appeal.

How to get there
Sofia is the usual international gateway, from where the resort is reached by road via the Razlog valley and Belitsa.
A winding mountain road climbs from Belitsa up into the forest to the resort.
