The snow centre
Panichishte is a small mountain area on the northern edge of Rila National Park, combining a handful of ski runs with a spa-resort tradition tied to the nearby thermal town of Sapareva Banya. It is a genuine outdoor area but a low-key one, with limited lift-served terrain that suits families and less-confident skiers rather than those chasing big verticals. Its real distinction is the aerial lift that climbs towards the celebrated Seven Rila Lakes, a glacial cirque that draws walkers in summer and lends the winter setting its drama. Snow is natural and mountain-dependent, so the season is shorter and less predictable than at Bulgaria's larger resorts such as Bansko. Come for the scenery and the quiet as much as the skiing.
