Vitosha is the ski mountain that rises straight out of Sofia, giving Bulgaria's capital a proper snow playground barely half an hour from the city centre. It is an easy day trip rather than a destination resort, best on a clear, cold weekend when the snow holds.

The resort
Vitosha is a broad, rounded massif looming over Sofia, and its main ski hub at Aleko feels more like the city's back garden than a self-contained resort. The terrain is friendly and forested, suiting beginners and cruising intermediates who want a few runs between coffee stops, with the summit of Cherni Vrah crowning the skyline. Because it sits so close to a major city, it draws weekend crowds and a cheerful, unpretentious local crowd rather than international package tourists. Snow can be fickle here: exposed, relatively low slopes and mild spells mean conditions swing between excellent and thin, so timing matters. On a bluebird day the views back over Sofia are the real draw.

How to get there
