The snow centre
Kartala is a modest, developing ski centre in the Bodrost area of the Rila Mountains, a short climb above the city of Blagoevgrad in south-western Bulgaria. Rather than a polished resort, it is a lift-served slope that opens the door to genuine high-mountain terrain, prized by Bulgarians for freeride lines, ski touring and winter trekking away from the crowds of Bansko. The named 'Black Vulture' massif rises well above the base, giving real vertical and a proper alpine feel once you climb. Snow lies from around December to April at altitude, though the small scale and single-drag-lift setup mean it rewards self-reliant skiers more than beginners after groomed pistes. Come for quiet mountain days and easy backcountry access close to a city.
