Eryri (Snowdonia), a ring of castles and the adventure capital

Llywelyn2000 / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Wales at its most vertical. Eryri / Snowdonia National Park has the highest mountains in England and Wales and a rack railway to the top of Yr Wyddfa; Edward I's castle ring — Caernarfon, Conwy, Beaumaris, Harlech — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; and the old slate quarries, themselves UNESCO-listed, have been reinvented as zip lines, underground trampolines and surf lagoons. Anglesey and the Llŷn add the beaches.

Best time: May–Sep for the mountains; Jun–Aug for the beaches
