The snow centre
Alpensia is a modern, purpose-built ski resort in the mountains of Pyeongchang, best known as a hub of the 2018 Winter Olympics, where it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies and the ski-jumping, biathlon, cross-country and sliding events. The downhill slopes themselves are compact and geared towards beginners, families and improvers rather than experts, but they are immaculately groomed and backed by extensive snowmaking. What sets Alpensia apart is the surrounding Olympic infrastructure and resort amenities, from the landmark ski-jump stadium to hotels, a water park and golf. The Korean winter is cold and dry, giving a reliable if not especially long season on machine-assisted snow. Fast rail and road links from Seoul make it easy to reach.

Excellent, with gentle, well-groomed slopes and lessons.

How to get there
Incheon is the main international gateway, with Yangyang the nearer regional airport.
Around two to two-and-a-half hours from Seoul by road, or via the high-speed KTX rail line to Pyeongchang.
Best time: Best in the Korean winter, roughly December to February, when cold, dry conditions and snowmaking keep the slopes in good shape.
