The resort
Chopok Juh is the southern flank of the Jasná Nízke Tatry resort, climbing from the Horehronie valley on the far side of the massif up to the Chopok summit. Where the northern Jasná side is shaded and busy, the south face is sunnier, quieter and more traditional in feel, catching afternoon light and offering long descents back to its base below. It shares the Chopok summit with the north side, so skiers can ride over the ridge and link both aspects, but on its own it has a distinct, less crowded character. The upper slopes are open and exposed, the lower ones tree-lined, and the whole side feels a step more low-key than its glamorous northern counterpart. It appeals to those who prefer sunshine and space to buzz.
Go for sunnier, quieter skiing on Slovakia's biggest mountain, long descents with fewer people, and the option to link over the summit to the more developed northern side. It suits intermediates and sun-seekers who want the Jasná terrain without the crowds of the main base.
As the south-facing aspect, this side gets more sun and warmer afternoons, so its snow softens faster and it leans more on snowmaking and grooming to stay in shape than the shaded north side. The upper, exposed slopes still deliver a high-mountain feel and can close in storms, but the overall mood is sunnier, calmer and more relaxed, with long cruising descents to the valley.

Skiing & terrain
Gentle slopes at the southern base give beginners a sunny, uncrowded place to start.
Intermediates enjoy long, sunny reds descending from the high ground to the valley.
Advanced skiers can access the summit and its steeper terrain, or cross to the north side's off-piste.
Dedicated expert terrain is more limited here than on the north face; experts tend to cross over for the freeride bowls.
Sunny southern descents
The south face catches the sun through the day, making it the warmer, brighter side of Chopok for long, relaxed cruising. Its descents to the Horehronie valley are quieter than anything on the busy northern side.
Over-the-top link to Jasná north
From the Chopok summit, skiers can drop over the ridge onto the shaded northern Jasná side, with its bigger base and freeride terrain, and return. The south side works both as a destination in its own right and as a sunny gateway to the whole mountain.
The exposed Chopok summit
The high, open summit shared with the north side gives the south flank a genuine high-mountain top, with wide views across the Low Tatras. Reaching it from the sunny side is a highlight when the weather is clear.

How to get there
Poprad (POP) is the nearest gateway; the southern base is reached from the Horehronie valley on the far side of the massif, a longer, more winding approach than the northern side.
The drive to the south base runs through the Horehronie valley on mountain roads; alternatively, many skiers reach this side by lift over the Chopok summit from the north.
Best time: January and February offer the firmest snow on this sunny aspect, with March delivering warm, bluebird spring skiing.
