The snow centre
Shemshak is a real Alborz mountain resort set high above the valleys north-east of Tehran, with pistes running roughly between 2,550 and 3,050 metres. It has long had a reputation as the more serious of the capital's ski areas, favoured by advanced skiers for its steep, fast, mogul-strewn descents while gentler Dizin draws the crowds. Served by chairlifts and surface lifts, it is close enough to the city to be a natural weekend escape, yet high and cold enough to offer proper alpine snow. Its stand-out feature is floodlit night skiing, making it the only resort in Iran where you can ski after dark. This is a rugged, characterful mountain rather than a manicured megaresort.
The slope
Some easier terrain exists, but the mountain is not primarily a beginners' hill.
Confident intermediates will find plenty to enjoy on the main pistes.
Steep, mogul-heavy runs make this one of Iran's best mountains for strong skiers.
Demanding off-piste and steep lines reward experts, though without patrolled big-mountain infrastructure.
