The Peak District, Sherwood Forest and stately-home country

Duncan Harris from Nottingham, UK / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY 2.0)

Britain's first national park, the Peak District, fills the region's northwest with gritstone edges, limestone dales and walking straight out of the towns. Around it: Chatsworth and Burghley among England's grandest stately homes, Robin Hood's Sherwood Forest, Lincoln's cathedral on its hill, and Nottingham, Derby and Leicester — where Richard III was found under a car park.

Best time: Apr–Oct for the Peak District; Sep for heather and quieter trails
