South West England

Stonehenge, Georgian Bath, Jurassic cliffs and the Cornish coast

England's holiday coast and its deepest prehistory in one region. Stonehenge and Avebury sit on Salisbury Plain; Bath layers Roman baths under Georgian crescents; Bristol is the creative city on the Avon; and the peninsula runs out past the Jurassic Coast, Dartmoor and Exmoor to Cornwall's surf beaches, fishing harbours and the Isles of Scilly. Much of the Cotswolds is here too.

Best time: Jun–Sep for the coast; May and Sep for Cornwall without the school holidays
