Cambridge, the Broads, big skies and a quiet coast

Peter Trimming / Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 2.0)

The flattest, widest-skied corner of England. Cambridge punts under the college backs, the Norfolk Broads thread 125 miles of navigable waterway through reedbeds and windmills, and the coast runs from Norfolk's seal colonies and beach huts down through Suffolk's Southwold and Aldeburgh to the Essex estuaries. Norwich, Colchester and Ely add cathedral-and-castle weight.

Best time: May–Sep; Jun–Aug for the Broads and the coast
