The snow centre
Kiviõli Adventure Centre Snow Park is an unusual little ski hill in Estonia's north-east, laid out on a towering semi-coke ash heap left by the region's oil-shale industry and now among the tallest artificial hills in the Baltics. In winter its slopes are dressed with natural and machine-made snow, offering downhill runs, a freestyle snow park and tubing on a genuine, if manufactured, mound rising from the surrounding flatland. The vertical is modest and the season is a cold Estonian winter one, but the novelty of skiing an industrial landmark gives it real character. Beyond the snow it operates all year as an adventure centre, with a zip line, summer tubing and events. It suits families, beginners and freestylers rather than skiers chasing long descents.
The slope
Gentle slopes and a tubing lane make it easy for first-timers.
Short runs and the snow park give confident skiers some variety.
The limited vertical offers little for advanced skiers.
No expert terrain, though the freestyle park adds interest.
Skiing a former ash mountain
The whole hill is a reclaimed oil-shale ash heap, one of the tallest artificial hills in the Baltics, turned into a snow park.
