Vasilitsa is a high, wind-blown ski centre deep in the Pindus mountains of northern Greece, prized by Greek skiers for its scenery and, in a good winter, some of the best natural snow in the country. It is remote and low-key, a mountain for those who like their skiing wild rather than polished.

The resort
Set high in the Pindus range near Grevena, Vasilitsa is one of Greece's more serious mountains, treasured for open, panoramic terrain and the quality of its snow when the storms deliver. It has an unpolished, almost frontier character: fewer crowds, simpler facilities and a strong pull for skiers who value the wild alpine setting over resort glitz. The surrounding region is dotted with stone-built Vlach and Zagori villages that give a trip here real cultural texture. Weather can be dramatic, and high winds sometimes close the upper lifts, but on a settled powder day it rewards handsomely. It suits confident intermediates and adventurous skiers happy to make the long journey.

How to get there
Thessaloniki (SKG) is the practical international gateway, a long but scenic drive west into the Pindus; the small regional airport at Ioannina is another option.
A lengthy mountain-road transfer of several hours from Thessaloniki, winding up into high, often snowy terrain.
Best time: Deep midwinter, roughly January into February, gives the coldest and most reliable Pindus snow.
