The snow centre
Shirbad is a genuine mountain ski area on the flanks of Mount Binalud, the high massif that rises west of Mashhad in Razavi Khorasan province. Sitting close to 2,900 metres at its top, it enjoys stable cold and is regarded as one of the snowiest ski spots in eastern Iran, a rare piece of proper winter terrain in an otherwise arid region. It is a compact, family-oriented complex with a single main run served by a T-bar, plus snow tubing, rental and a ski school, drawing day-trippers up from Mashhad rather than destination skiers. The high, open setting gives it a bracing alpine feel and dependable cover through the cold months. It is best approached as an easy, scenic day out on snow near one of Iran's major cities.
The slope
Gentle pitches and a ski school make it a solid learner venue.
The main run offers pleasant cruising, but the area is small.
Limited lift-served terrain for stronger skiers.
The surrounding high Binalud slopes appeal to ski-tourers rather than piste skiers.
High on Mount Binalud
Perched near the roof of Razavi Khorasan province, Shirbad offers open, snowy slopes with sweeping views, a genuine winter outpost in Iran's arid east.
