Après & vibe

Après leans towards mountain cafés, restaurants and lodges with panoramic terraces, with the added option of heading back down to Almaty for the city's full dining and nightlife scene in the evening. On the mountain the mood is relaxed and view-focused.

The resort

Shymbulak sits in the Zailiysky Alatau range at the head of the Medeu gorge, remarkably close to Almaty yet high enough to feel firmly alpine. A cable-car system rises from the Medeu complex up to the resort and on towards the ridgelines, delivering skiers into a bowl of snowy peaks in a matter of minutes. The base gathers hotels, restaurants and lift stations in a compact, well-run cluster, and the whole experience is defined by its dramatic setting and easy access from the city. It is a polished, cosmopolitan resort that serves as the anchor of Kazakhstan's ski scene.

Come for genuine high-mountain skiing within touching distance of a major city. Shymbulak suits intermediates and improving skiers who want scenic, sunny pistes, straightforward access and the novelty of combining a mountain day with time in Almaty. Its blend of altitude, views and convenience makes it a standout for a short, spectacular ski break in Central Asia.

High in the Zailiysky Alatau, Shymbulak enjoys a cold, sunny continental winter with a long season and plenty of bluebird days on largely open, well-groomed slopes. Snow tends to be cold and dry, and the altitude keeps conditions dependable through the core months. The upper mountain feels genuinely alpine, exposed to the big peaks all around.

Skiing & terrain

Gentle groomed slopes near the mid-mountain give beginners an accessible, scenic place to progress.

Intermediates

Open blue and red pistes are the resort's core, offering sunny, view-filled cruising.

Advanced

Steeper upper pitches provide a worthwhile challenge for stronger skiers on a good day.

Experts & off-piste

The Medeu-Shymbulak gondola

A modern gondola climbs from the Medeu sports complex on the edge of Almaty up to the resort and beyond, gliding over the mudflow dam and pine slopes. The ride itself, with its sweeping views, is one of the great mountain approaches in Central Asia.

Medeu high-altitude skating rink

Directly below the resort sits Medeu, the celebrated high-altitude outdoor skating rink famous for speed-skating records. It makes a natural pairing with a day on the slopes and is part of the area's sporting heritage.

Zailiysky Alatau summit views

The upper lifts open onto a panorama of snow-capped Zailiysky Alatau peaks and glaciers. Clear days here deliver some of the most dramatic city-to-mountain contrasts anywhere in the ski world.
