Après & vibe
A small hotel and restaurant at the foot of the slope provide a cosy mountain base in the gorge.
The snow centre
Ak-Tash is a small outdoor ski base set in the wild Oruu-Sai gorge of the Kyrgyz Tian-Shan, only a short drive from the capital Bishkek. It is genuine mountain terrain rather than an indoor or artificial venue: a compact lift-served area at its heart, but far better loved for the freeride and ski-touring the surrounding juniper-forested slopes and untouched valleys offer. A small hotel and restaurant at the foot of the piste stay open year-round, and rentals are available on site. The mood is rustic and adventurous, aimed at Bishkek locals and off-piste enthusiasts rather than resort skiers. Snow arrives with the Central Asian winter and the area is best in the cold heart of the season.
The slope
The lift-served slope gives beginners a gentle place to start.
A modest pisted area for building confidence between lifts.
The real appeal is the off-piste and freeride terrain around the base.
Ski-touring and backcountry lines in the surrounding valleys reward the experienced and equipped.
Freeride in the Oruu-Sai gorge
Ak-Tash is known as one of Kyrgyzstan's freeride bases, with ski-touring and off-piste through juniper forest and untouched Tian-Shan valleys.
