The resort
Founded by staff of Bishkek's polytechnic institute, Politeh (Polytech) is one of a cluster of modest ski bases in the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range just south of the capital. It is a simple, unvarnished operation with only a few lifts, yet it packs a genuinely respectable vertical drop into a compact area, giving it a bigger-mountain feel than its size suggests. Facilities are basic and the atmosphere is authentically local rather than resort-polished, drawing Bishkek weekenders and a growing trickle of adventurous foreign skiers. Snow can be very good in a strong Tian Shan winter, though conditions are variable and the infrastructure minimal. It suits confident skiers happy to trade comfort for character, cheap lift access and quiet Central Asian slopes.

How to get there
Bishkek's Manas International (FRU) is the gateway, a short drive north of the city and the natural arrival point rather than distant Almaty.
Roughly an hour's drive south from Bishkek up into the foothills, on roads that can be rough in winter.
Best time: The northern-hemisphere Central Asian season runs from December to March, with the deepest, coldest snow typically in January and February.
