The snow centre
Ski base Too-Ashuu is a genuine, remote high-mountain ski area beside the Too-Ashuu pass on the mountain highway between Bishkek and Osh in Kyrgyzstan. Though it has only a couple of lifts and little formal piste, it sits at around 2,500 to 3,000 metres in the Tian Shan and is prized above all for freeride: the surrounding slopes carry some of the deepest and longest-lasting snow in the country, up to a couple of metres in a good winter. That altitude gives it one of the longest seasons in Central Asia, and Bishkek operators run day and weekend freeride trips here through the heart of winter. It is a place for confident off-piste skiers and adventurers rather than beginners seeking groomed runs.
The slope
Limited; there is little groomed piste and access is remote.
Some lift-served skiing, but the draw is off-piste.
Strong, with abundant open freeride terrain.
Superb backcountry and road-drop lines for those equipped for it.
Freeride powder days
Wide open slopes around the pass hold some of Kyrgyzstan's deepest, most reliable snow, drawing freeriders from Bishkek.
