Chunkurchak is a compact, easy-going ski base in the Tian Shan foothills, the most popular winter escape within an hour of Bishkek. It suits day-trippers, families and freeriders drawn to Kyrgyzstan's famously light, dry powder.

The resort
Set in a broad valley of the Kyrgyz Range, Chunkurchak is the go-to weekend hill for the capital rather than a destination resort. The pisted terrain is modest and gentle, ideal for learners and improving intermediates, but the real draw is the continental Tian Shan snow: cold, dry and light, feeding easily reached off-piste bowls and ridges above the lifts. The mood is unpretentious and Central-Asian, with simple cafes, hire shacks and a lively local crowd at weekends. It works best as a half- or full-day outing rather than a week-long stay. Snow generally holds from December through March at this altitude.

How to get there
Bishkek's Manas International Airport (FRU) is the gateway, roughly an hour's drive away.
A straightforward drive of about 45 kilometres south from Bishkek up the Chunkurchak valley, by car or arranged transfer.
Best time: January and February bring the coldest, driest powder; the season runs roughly December to March.
