Perched in the Tien Shan mountains a short way above the town of Karakol at the eastern end of Lake Issyk-Kul, this is the flagship of Kyrgyzstan's growing ski scene and one of Central Asia's most rewarding adventure destinations. The high base and dry continental climate produce light, cold powder, and the real appeal lies in the tree runs, open bowls and abundant off-piste that draw freeriders and ski-tourers seeking untracked snow far from the crowds. Facilities are simple and lifts are basic, so it suits self-reliant, adventurous skiers rather than those wanting polished resort comforts. Prices are low, the scenery is spectacular, and the sense of frontier skiing is a large part of the draw. It is best treated as an expedition-flavoured trip.
