The resort
Șureanu is one of Romania's newer and higher ski developments, set deep in the little-visited Șureanu Mountains of the southern Carpathians in Alba county. Its elevation is its trump card: the pistes sit high enough to hold some of the most reliable snow in the country, and a modern gondola and detachable lifts belie the remoteness of the place. The terrain is compact and mostly intermediate, wide open above the treeline with big mountain views, and the slopes are usually quiet given how far it is from any city. This is a resort for those who value snow quality, modern infrastructure and solitude over lively resort life, which here is minimal.

How to get there
Sibiu (SBZ) is the nearest airport, roughly a couple of hours away, and a far more sensible gateway than distant Bucharest; Cluj-Napoca is another option.
A long final approach on mountain roads means a hire car is effectively essential.
Best time: January to March, when the high slopes hold their deepest and most reliable snow.
