The snow centre
Perched near the top of the forested Bükk plateau in north-eastern Hungary, Bánkút is a genuine outdoor ski area rather than a dome or dry slope, historically the most snow-reliable spot in a country with very little skiing. It is a small, old-school place of a handful of lifts and short runs through the trees, popular with families and day-trippers from Miskolc and the wider region. Being Hungary, the altitude is modest and the season is short and variable, so cold winters are needed to bring the hill to life. The atmosphere is unpretentious and local, with the appeal lying in fresh mountain air and easy runs rather than serious vertical. It suits beginners, improvers and anyone curious about skiing in the heart of Hungary.
