The snow centre
Sípark Mátraszentistván is a genuine outdoor ski area high in the Mátra mountains of northern Hungary, among the country's loftiest mountain villages and less than 100 km from Budapest. Modest by Alpine standards, it is nonetheless one of the largest and most developed ski parks in Hungary, spreading a handful of groomed runs across open mountain meadows served by a good spread of lifts, including a chairlift. Snowmaking and floodlighting extend a naturally short and variable Hungarian winter, and the whole place is geared to families, beginners and improvers from the capital and beyond. It is a friendly, accessible day-and-weekend destination rather than a high-mountain resort.
