The snow centre
Kékestető is the ski centre on Kékes, at just over a thousand metres the highest mountain in Hungary, in the wooded Mátra range north-east of Budapest. It is a genuine outdoor area rather than an indoor or plastic venue, but a small and low one: a handful of short pistes and simple lifts crowned by the summit's landmark television tower. As the highest and snowiest ground in a country of plains, it draws Budapest day-trippers, families and beginners whenever winter delivers cover. The slopes are gentle and the atmosphere unhurried, more a friendly local hill than a mountain resort. Snow is natural but marginal at this modest altitude, so the season can be short and patchy.
