The resort
Set high on the treeless Šar Planina above the city of Tetovo, Popova Šapka (Popova Shapka) was a glamorous resort in the Yugoslav era and retains a haunting, faded-grandeur atmosphere today. The lift infrastructure is patchy and old, so the appeal now lies less in groomed runs than in the vast, open alpine bowls that make it a magnet for freeriders and ski-tourers when conditions align. It suits adventurous, self-reliant skiers who value terrain and solitude over comfort and après. Snow can be excellent at this altitude, but wind exposure, variable lift operations and thin services mean it rewards flexibility. For those who come prepared, it offers some of the most characterful backcountry skiing in the Balkans.

How to get there
Skopje (SKP) is the natural gateway, around an hour and a half away via Tetovo.
The winding road up from Tetovo climbs steeply to the plateau and can be demanding in snow.
Best time: January to March for the deepest snow and the best touring conditions.
