Zahar Berkut is a modern lift complex on the slopes above the village of Volosianka near Slavske, in the Ukrainian Carpathians. It forms part of the country's best-known ski district, with tree-lined runs and a relaxed, distinctly Ukrainian mountain atmosphere.

The resort
Zahar Berkut sits above Volosianka in the Slavske area of the Lviv-region Carpathians, long the heart of Ukrainian skiing. Compared with the older Trostyan slopes nearby, it offers newer chairlifts and neatly groomed runs that wind through spruce forest, appealing to families, beginners and cruising intermediates. The whole Slavske district has a warm, homely feel, with village guesthouses, wood-smoke and hearty Carpathian cooking rather than glossy resort infrastructure. It is inexpensive and unhurried. Snow at these modest Carpathian altitudes is variable, so the best conditions come in the depths of winter and snowmaking supports the main pistes.

How to get there
Lviv is the regional hub, roughly two to three hours by road, and historically the nearest airport; overland approaches through neighbouring countries are also used.
A drive south from Lviv into the mountains, or arrival by the region's rail line to Slavske followed by a short local transfer.
Best time: January and February bring the coldest, most reliable snow in the Carpathians.
